Documentary on islanders' Christmas refugee mission to be released

Sunday 10 January 2021

A film documenting the experiences of islanders who spent Christmas helping refugees in France is to be released later this year.

‘A Home to Another’ will chronicle Joe Fry, her son Joseph, and Alcindo Pinto’s journey to Dunkirk, Calais and Paris, and is set to be released online in Spring.

Alcindo first told Express about their journey back in November, prior to organising a ‘Drive by, Drop Off, Donate’ event for islanders to donate goods for the camps.

Their accompanying GoFundMe also raised over £5,000, alongside a raft of donations from the event.

Joe and Alcindo then both documented their experience for Express in a piece published earlier this week, giving a series of insights into daily life in the camps across the weeks they were there, as well as sharing the moving stories of the men they met along the way.

Before their trip, however, Arthouse Jersey also connected the trio with a Jersey filmmaker based in the UAE, Luke Romo Hodges, and commissioned him to tell their story through Calais, Dunkirk, and Paris in a visual format.

Luke said of his new short: “When ArtHouse Jersey offered me this opportunity, I had no clue what I was about to embark on.

“Working in cinema sometimes makes you forget that the stories we tell ourselves are actually the realities of others. We've been driven to remain the spectators of our world instead of taking part.

"I think this film is really about this understanding."

Arthouse Jersey Director Tom Dingle said: “There are hundreds of thousands of stateless people in France alone, desperately awaiting asylum, and it is these people’s experiences that are central to this commission.

“The most exciting projects often come from serendipitous moments where collaboration becomes possible. This was one such example.

“We have admired the work of Luke Hodges for some time, both atmospherically and stylistically, and the chance to connect him, not only to the efforts of this admirable group of Jersey people, but to the bigger refugee crisis story is something we are glad to have been able to do.

“It’s my hope that ‘A Home To Another’ will shine just a little bit of light on the extremely difficult circumstances these people face while demonstrating just how far small acts of kindness can go."
