At the dog wash…

Eco dog washing facilities could ‘pup up’ at garages across Jersey if a pilot across the water goes well.

The Co-op has put forward a planning application to install a facility at one of its En Route stores in St. Sampson, Guernsey.

If the application is approved, and the facility is successful, a spokesperson told Express the idea might be rolled out in other locations - including Jersey.

"Dog washing facilities are already being widely used around the world and we feel the addition to our St. Sampson’s En Route will please many islanders,” the Co-op’s Chief Development Officer Jim Plumley said. "We will share more news with our customers once we know the result of our planning application.”

According to the Guernsey planning application, the St. Sampson site was chosen for the trial run due to its proximity to the coast, which means the En Route "is often used by dog walkers as they pass."

"The provision of a facility for cleaning dogs at the end of a walk on the beach will be an added facility that should be much appreciated," the application states.

It added that the proposed ‘iClean DogWash’ unit meets current European environmental standards for energy efficiency, water consumption, noise and discharge.

“The unit will provide a very energy/resource efficient way of washing a dog which should be much more efficient than the alternative of an uncontrolled hose pipe discharging to surface water drains," the application continued.

'These units have been installed around Europe and in the UK at appropriate locations, particularly at Garden Centres and Services/Petrol stations. They are of an attractive design and will fit into the PFS surroundings with minimal visual impact."
