Youngsters will be hot on the trail of some mythic fire-breathing monsters this weekend.

Dragons will be brought to life at Mont Orgueil castle on Sunday as children discover whether they really did exist and what they might have looked like.

It’s the first of seven Discovery Days being organised by Jersey Heritage Trust this year to help bring the Island’s history to life.

Over 3,000 scrapbooks full of quests, games and fun facts have been given out free to schoolchildren aged four to seven to encourage them to engage with the Island’s varied heritage and culture, both past and present.

Jersey Heritage’s Family Events Coordinator Helen Otterwell said: “The My History Scrapbook, Annual and Discovery Days are some our most successful initiatives, helping young Islanders engage with our heritage and build an understanding of how we have evolved over the centuries.”

Other days are planned this year when children can discover more about the Island’s Occupation, bugs and birds, castles and even dinosaurs.

The scrapbooks have been sponsored by Lloyds Bank and next week when they are back at school, all children aged eight to 11 will be given the Jersey Heritage Annual – a comic style book packed full of fun facts and activities to aid their learning in the classroom.

The idea is to encourage children to find out more about Jersey's history and create their own stories and adventures against the backdrop of Jersey's heritage.

Islands Director at Lloyds Bank Tim Cooke said: "Lloyds Bank has worked with Jersey Heritage for a number of years. We are delighted to be able to continue our support for such a dynamic organisation which makes the rich heritage of the island accessible and interesting for all generations."
