Edinburgh Fringe nominee heading home for book festival

Wednesday 02 September 2015

Fresh from being nominated as the best comedy newcomer in last month's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, comedian and storyteller John Henry Falle is heading home for the Connections: Jersey Festival of Words.

Performing as the Story Beast, John Henry earned a nomination as best comedy newcomer at the festival, and now Islanders will have the chance to experience his home-grown talent as part of the book festival when he sets off on an Island tour in the Mobile Library on Friday 2 October.

The Story Beast brings a wild and inventive new twist to the age-old art of storytelling. His road show is just one of the special events being staged by Jersey Library for the Island’s first book festival, which runs from 30 September to 4 October.

A series of reading group sessions based on some of the writers whose works feature in the festival, including Gerald Durrell, Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and novelists Owen Sheers and Alex Preston, will be held every Tuesday lunchtime at 1pm from 8th September in the Town Library in the run-up to the Festival.

During the Festival members of the public will be able to discover some of the Library’s ‘hidden treasures’ in special tours of the rare book collections, as well as take part in children’s stories and activities, family history sessions and ebook workshops.

Harnessing new technology to the joy of reading will also be the theme of Get Jersey Reading, a new website created by students from Digital Jersey’s coding course working together with Jersey Library.  The web app’ will be launched on 21 September, to help readers explore and share new reading experiences.

On Saturday 3 October, Skype will be used to present a session on bibliotherapy by Ella Berthoud, whose best-selling The Novel Cure suggests which works of fiction can help to lift the spirits when afflicted by many different kinds of life problems.

Connections: Jersey Festival of Words 2015 opens at the Library at 8 pm on Wednesday 30 September with a tribute to the late Jersey poet and teacher Alan Jones, coinciding with publication of a collection of his work, Ninety Mile Beach.
