WATCH: Vamos a comer! El Gato Gordo brings "a bit of Spain" to Jersey

A new Spanish restaurant has been unveiled in Liberty Wharf, as the owner of two other hotspots looks to turn the area into a culinary "hub" encompassing a mix of cuisine from different cultures.

El Gato Gordo, which means 'The Fat Cat' in Spanish, officially opened earlier this week.

Owner Claudio Abreu, who is also behind the respective Japanese and Italian-style restaurants Izakaya and Rigatoni – located just metres from each other in Liberty Wharf – said his latest venture sought to bring "a bit of Spain" to Jersey.

He added: "It's a tapas bar, very casual, very relaxed – good ingredients."

"We need more places in town that are cool places... not overly expensive"

He explained that customers can eat in or get a grazing board and take it away.

Mr Abreu continued: "We need more places in town that are cool places, nice places with good food but are not overly expensive... quite trendy, nice on your eyes, very clean, good service, relaxed waiting staff and very good food."

While he said the new restaurant was working with local suppliers, he explained that much of the produce was authentic, coming directly from España.

He added: "All the wines are Spanish, the beer is Spanish, charcuterie is Spanish, the cheeses are Spanish – everything we can get Spanish, we are."

Liberty Wharf "potential"

Noting the mix of Italian, Japanese – and now Spanish – restaurants he has introduced to the area, Mr Abreu acknowledged that Liberty Wharf had the potential to become a "food court".

"It could be such a nice buzz around here.

"It's such a historic place and town has moved to the front in terms of entertainment.

"We are here and it has a great feel to it, almost like you are in another place. So the potential is definitely there, whether it will work or not – I'm trying my best towards it."
