Elections: one week to go!

Wednesday 08 October 2014

In just a week Islanders will be picking the new set of politicians to sit in the States over the next three-and-a-half years.

Although a third of the seats in the States Chamber will be filled with politicians who grabbed a £46,000-per-year States seat unopposed on nomination night, there are still some big decisions facing Islanders as 69 candidates vie for 32 States seats.

The polling stations around the Island will be open from 8 am to 8 pm on election day – you can check the States’ www.vote.je website to make sure that you know which polling station you should go to.

The election is the first on which all seats were up on the same day.

But voters don’t have to wait until next Wednesday to cast their votes - in an effort to improve Jersey’s poor voter turnout, the States have set up pre-polling stations to make it easier to cast your vote.

The main station in town is at St Paul’s Centre, and will be open every weekday from 8 am to 6 pm until Friday – anyone on the electoral roll in any parish can cast an early vote there, but if you’re going, you need to make sure that you take some photo ID.

A one-off pre-polling station will also be at Trinity Youth Centre on Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.

Voters can also use the pre-poll stations to cast their votes in the referendum on the position of the Constables.
