Eliza proves she’s a cut above the rest in fundraising

A six-year-old who will lose her long golden locks today has raised more than £3,000 to help the island's elderly.

Eliza Millen-Swainston, who, when not enjoying the summer hols, is a pupil at St. Clement’s School, decided to have her 31-inch-long hair cut after her mum, Maryjane, explained how her sister, Alice, had raised over £1,500 for Age Concern in 2015.

Like Alice, Eliza’s locks – which will be cut down to a bob – will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for sick children who lose their hair.

The big chop was due to take place at 10:00 this morning.

Eliza’s fundraising has included collecting donations in town over several weekends.

Proud mum Maryjane said: “Eliza has worked so hard raising money for Age Concern, including 12 hours on three Saturdays standing in Queen Street shaking a bucket and chatting to everyone who stopped to make a donation. 

“She has also spent time at Age Concern chatting to the elderly that rely on the wonderful service the charity provides. The charity is a lifeline for so many of our elderly here in Jersey and they rely solely on donations to keep operating. 

“I am incredibly proud of my Eliza. She is the happiest, sweetest, most caring and kind little girl and brings joy to everyone she meets.”
