End of a Legend in local tourism

Wednesday 27 January 2016

The man who set up a local tourist attraction which saw millions through its doors over the years said he’s sad to be closing it for good.

Owner Chris Lewis says it’s the end of an era for the Living Legend in St Peter after almost quarter of a century.

He’s decided not to re-open the five-acre site that housed a fairground, crazy golf course and go-kart track and was the place to go to see a show all about Jersey's history.

Mr Lewis said: “I was here back in 1990 and came up with the idea in the first place. We’ve had a huge number of incredible people working here and I’m really proud of The Jersey Experience and the golf and the go-karts. It’s been my baby and all the people who’ve worked here have given it their best.

“We’ve been operating as a visitor attraction on an annual basis for the last few years. But there comes a point when you’ve got to reinvest in the site."

Mr Lewis received permission to build a care home and six luxury houses on the site back in 2012 and although he said he won’t confirm at this time whether that development will still happen, it’s time for him to reinvest in his other tourism related businesses – Tantivy Coaches and the Seaside Café at Grève de Lecq.

He said: "We would like to thank all our millions of visitors over the years for their custom and support. We are so grateful; it has been an exciting adventure and a great pleasure! I’m very sad, it’s the end of an era but it’s time to move on.”
