Exhibition brings more relief for earthquake victims

A Jersey couple have used their photos from a recent trip to Nepal to raise £1,705 for the earthquake appeal.

Caroline and David Moody were in the country last November, and organised an exhibition of the images that David captured to help the relief effort.

Last month’s devastating tremor on 25 April claimed the lives of 8,000 people and this week the country was hit by another measuring 7.4 magnitude that’s likely to have killed and injured more.

Caroline, who is Assistant Editor of the JEP, said: “We are delighted with the amount raised, and very grateful to everyone who gave us money and supported us by coming along.

“We hope it will go some way to helping those in need, especially when you consider that the average wage in Nepal for people in the service industries is just £650 a year.”

The Jersey Overseas Aid Commission has already sent £90,000 to the relief effort, and a public appeal was launched by Bailiff William Bailhache, who described the unfolding disaster as “a human tragedy on a massive scale”.

The exhibition titled “Namaste Nepal” was held in Cooper’s Coffee at Castle Quay and ran for nine days, finishing on Monday.

It featured the above picture of three-year-old Anouska from just outside Pokhara in the foothills of the Annapurna range in Nepal, one of several photos the couple hoped would raise money and awareness of the plight of the Nepalese people.

Caroline said: “We will continue to accept donations, but we are keen to get this first sum paid over to the appeal as soon as possible.”

She said they are keen to return to Nepal as soon as it's realistically possible.
