Fire services battle a two-car fire in St Helier

Wednesday 21 June 2017

Firefighters were called to a "significant" car fire this morning in a residential area of St Helier.

The fire service responded to the fire in the Apsley Road just before 6:20 this morning.

They received multiple calls reporting that a car was on fire on the quiet residential road and one fire engine containing five firefighters was sent to the scene.

Prior to the fire fighters arriving on scene, the fire had been developing quickly and there was a large growing black plume of smoke bellowing upwards in the distance.

Upon arrival two firefighters in breathing apparatus are said to have attacked the fire, which had since spread to involve two cars. Attacking the blaze with a hose reel, the firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished it.

Residents in the property adjacent to the fire had already evacuated in fear that the fire may spread into their home.

The heat from the fire damaged the property’s windows and facia and due to the fact that the night was so warm a lot of windows were open thus allowing some smoke damage to occur.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
