Five teens deny charges in relation to Morgan Huelin death – trial in March

Wednesday 20 January 2016

Five teenage boys facing charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice over the death of 16-year-old Morgan Huelin in July face a trial in the Youth Court in March.

Lawyers for all five boys – who are accused of moving him from a garage to a roadside - entered “not guilty” pleas in a hearing yesterday afternoon.

None of the defendants attended the hearing.

The Youth Court has also formally accepted jurisdiction for the case after considering whether the matter should go up to the Royal Court for a full jury trial – that decision means that the maximum possible sentence that the defendants could receive if found guilty would be 12 months detention in youth custody.

Pre-trial hearings have been scheduled for the middle of February, and Monday 14 March has been pencilled in for the start of what’s expected to be a week-long trial.

The charges facing the boys relate to the death of 16-year-old Morgan on the 4 July last year. He was found at the side of a road by a woman walking her dog, and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boys were all arrested a short time afterwards.

One of them faces additional charges of possessing LSD, MDMA and four indecent images of children, which he denies, and a single count of importing the class C drug Etizolam, which he admits on the basis that he thought that it was legal.

Because the Court proceedings have been opened, nothing that might lead to the identification of the defendants can be reported.
