The concept of the ‘professional politician’ has long-been held with as much suspicion as it is has respect.
Politicians are not only expected to have life experience, but many also come to politics with assets and interests, and they leave politics with assets and interests.
This Assembly is no different, especially – as it could be argued – their £50,000 salary is behind the responsibility and workload they shoulder.
However, Members’ interests have to be declared in the interests of transparency, which is a concept that the new Council of Ministers has strongly emphasised.
So, what interests does the new Assembly have? Who owns what parcel of land or has shares in which company? Who has a house in France or still works as a consultant or teacher?
Bailiwick Express dives into the detail…
Jersey's politicians are made to declare their interests on the States Assembly website, with the rules requiring a States member to register all interests within 30 days of election, and all shareholdings within 30 days of said shareholding being acquired.
Currently, "the requirement to register applies to all interests, whether received, arising, held or owned within or outside Jersey", though they are "not required to register any interest of his or her spouse or civil partner or cohabitee of which the elected member is not aware."
The Standing Orders of the States Assembly outline interests as including any employment, self-employment offices, directorships and partnerships.
This also includes shareholdings held by the states member of their spouse/partner/cohabitee, where "the nominal value of the shares are greater than 1% of the total value of the issued share capital of the company" or when the market value of the shares exceed what they're remunerated with in their States role.
Other interests which must be declared include land owned other than where they reside, any overseas visits, gifts given to them, anyone who sponsors them - in addition, the Orders invite members to declare any miscellaneous interests that might "reasonably be thought by other persons to influence his or her actions as an elected member."

I received £3,686.93 on 20 January 2021 from a Justgiving fundraising page I set up on 15 December 2020 to assist victims of a fire in St Aubin. There were 155 donors in total, contributing £3,837. The money I received was net of Justgiving’s fees. Following consultation with the Parish Constable and Rector, it was decided to distribute the money equally amongst the residents of block, all of whom were affected by the fire. Most of the funds have now been allocated now, at the time of writing (25/01/2021). I will provide a new entry in the register of interests to confirm when the final payees have received their funds. I am retaining £252 to reimburse costs I incurred in paying for one of the families to stay for four nights at the Merton Hotel from 5 January 2021. The family had not yet found new accommodation and their landlord would not pay for further temporary accommodation. I have submitted my bank statement, showing the money received from Justgiving, and the invoice from the Merton Hotel, to the Greffier of the States.
