John Sankey - De La Salle College's former headmaster has died.
He was aged 81.
Mr Sankey spent his entire career at De La Salle Jersey, initially as a teacher, then Headmaster and finally as a Governor of the College.
John Sankey began his teaching career at De La Salle in 1960. John was appointed as the first lay Headmaster of the College in 1995. Upon his retirement in 2000 he was appointed to the board of Governors where he served in a variety of roles until he left the Island in 2007.
In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI made Mr Sankey a Knight of the Pontifical Order of St Gregory the Great for his education work in the Catholic Church in the Island over the past 47 years.
The college's current headmaster Jason Turner says: "John Sankey was a true servant of the College and has undoubtedly touched the lives of many people in Jersey. John’s funeral will be held in the UK. It is our intention to hold a memorial Mass at some point in the future, here in the Island, where his life and service can be remembered and honoured."
He's asked those who knew Mr Sankey to remember him and his family in their prayers today.
“God of the living and the dead, you brought Jesus back to life;- raise up the faithfully departed and let us come with them into your heavenly glory. Amen."
