Fountain to be built at Government House to mark Liberation75

Tuesday 11 February 2020

The gardens of Government House will soon see the addition of a granite and aluminium fountain as part of plans to celebrate 75 years since the Liberation of the island.

Plans for the 2.15m fountain to be built on the west of the site have already been approved by the Planning Department.

It follows a competition launched in late 2018 by the Lieutenant-Governor - Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton - inviting local senior schools to design a new water fountain for the garden at Government House, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Liberation.

Features from all entries were mixed together to create the final design: a 2.15m fountain with a “satin finished aluminium basin”, sitting on a tiled base featuring a map of Jersey, and a water curtain lit by LEDs.

According to the Design and Heritage Impact Statement, produced by the Agent, Anthony Gibb Ltd., a Twisted Hazel, surrounded by moss, will sit at the centre of the basin along with a bronze, “stylised” plant sculpture.

The basin will be surrounded by a low granite rubble wall, with a dressed granite coping stone that will hanging over it. A LED strip light will be added to the underside.

The fountain will be built at the end of the footpath that goes through the garden, where a round plinth with a local granite wall and timber decking currently sits. It will be surrounded by shrubs and plants.

The fountain will be located near the wall separating Government House from the neighbouring property, and will sit below the 2.3m boundary wall.

It is also located 75m away from Government House, which will prevent any "detraction" from the Grade 2 Listed Building, as noted by the Assessment officer.

The Design and Heritage Impact Statement noted that Government House is an “appropriate” location for a fountain celebrating 75 years of Liberation.

As part of the plans, an “unsightly” security camera pole has been removed from the location.

Express has contacted the Government to find out who will fund the project but has yet to receive a reply.
