Fraud “rent collector” conning Islanders

Monday 16 March 2015

The police have warned that a fake rent collector calling himself “Antonio” has been tricking Islanders from around Jersey into handing over their rent.

The man – who officers say is in his late 50s, with a tanned complexion and a heavy build – has been turning up at homes around the Island and conning people into handing over their rent.

They have issued a warning about Antonio and are warning tenants to be wary about handing over cash. They also say that anyone with any information about who he really is should contact the police on 612612 or the anonymous Crimestoppers number on 0800 555555.

A statement from the police said: “The male is calling himself ‘Antonio’ and is described as in his late 50s, of tanned complexion, 5’5” tall of heavy build with medium-length black hair which is greying.

“He has stubble and is usually wearing glasses.

“He is described as almost always wearing a red jumper with a black jacket over the top and wearing grey trousers. In addition, he usually has a black briefcase in his possession.

“Police would like to remind all members of the public to be extra vigilant when handing over money to unknown persons.”
