More than 300 Island homes benefitted last year from a free States insulation scheme aimed at helping people reduce their energy bills.
In total, the scheme paid for enough loft insulation to cover 32 tennis courts and enough draught proofing to stretch to four times’ the height of the London Eye.
The Energy Efficiency Scheme is open to households who get Income Support or the Food Costs Bonus, or to over 65’s with less than £50,000 in savings (less than £30,000 if they live alone) and offers 100% funding for energy efficiency measures. It has been going since 2009 and costs the States £1 million per year, which paid for improvements to 326 properties, including cavity wall insulation to 67 homes.
Environment Minister Rob Duhamel said the scheme was a great example of how the States can help people to save money and reduce their carbon footprint.
He said: “The Energy Efficiency Programme is part of our Energy Plan to reduce consumption and lower Jersey’s carbon footprint. The success of the programme in 2013 shows what a significant difference small but concrete actions can make to energy use on a domestic level.
“It’s a really successful programme and I’m sure it will continue to go from strength to strength this year and continue the journey towards a future of sustainable energy use.”
