Free school milk is back (but just for a day)

Primary schoolchildren across the Island are getting a real taste of Jersey today.

Jersey Dairy are delivering over 6,000 cartons of our famous white stuff to their schools for free to mark World School Milk Day – A UN initiative to try and get more youngsters drinking it.

Youngsters used to get it every day but the States stopped school milk back in 2011 to save money, arguing that they were getting enough goodness in their diets without it.

Jersey Dairy’s Head of Marketing Bob Jones said: “Milk contains 10 essential nutrients including vitamins and minerals that children need for good health as part of a balanced diet and Jersey milk, in particular, has 20 per cent more calcium and protein than milk produced from other dairy breeds.

“We have produced over 6,000 cartons so that every child at school between the ages of 4 and 11 can enjoy a carton of milk. It is hoped that initiatives such as this encourage more young people to make milk a regular part of their diet.

“Jersey Dairy is grateful to all the schools who are taking part in the programme, many of which are keen to participate and raise awareness of the health benefits of milk drinking versus high sugar alternatives.”

Children in dozens of countries around the world are getting free milk at school today.
