Colourful skies, smiley pups and abstract snaps captured as part of a community photo project launched during lockdown are now on display in a new exhibition.

Jersey Arts Centre launched 'Off the Wall' on Monday 30 March 2020, as the island went into lockdown, to give islanders a weekly creative prompt.

According to the brief, the theatre and community space wanted “to capture your creativity and ingenuity during these extraordinary times and we hope that by sharing your photographs you will help us inspire others.”

The project ran until 11 September, with a total of 665 photographs submitted by 194 photographers.

During that time, a featured photograph displaying the week’s theme was shared every day, culminating on a composite virtual gallery of all submitted works on a Friday to celebrate all the works that had been entered.

The themes ranged from abstract ideas such as ‘Home’, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Calm’, to more direct prompts such as ‘Coast’, ‘Wildlife’ and ‘Blue’.

After Jersey Arts Centre closed its doors again due to covid-19 restrictions in December 2020, ‘Off the Wall’ resumed on Monday 11 January 2021 and still continues to this day. Recent themes have included; ‘Food’, ‘Winter Walks’, ‘Nighttime’ and ‘Easter’.

Meanwhile, a selection of photographs is now on display ‘On the Wall’ at the Berni Gallery. Jersey Arts Centre’s Exhibitions Coordinator, Wayne Stewart, along with its Exhibitions Sub-Committee, browsed through the hundreds of photographs to select a wide variety of photography styles, including black and white, portrait and landscape images.

Featuring work from 86 local photographers, the display represents “a snapshot of an extraordinary period of time, and reveal the depth and range of talent in the local photography scene”, the team at the Arts Centre said.

It features pets, portraits as well as colourful sunrises and sunsets, local landscapes as well as abstract snaps.

The exhibition can be seen until 24 April at the Berni Gallery, between 12:00 and 17:00 from Monday to Friday, and between 10:00 and 14:00 on Saturdays.

If the exhibition has inspired you to get involved, keep an eye out on Jersey Arts Centre's social media pages, or on artscentre.je, for the latest theme.
