Grouville politicians will stand again

Wednesday 06 August 2014

Grouville’s Constable and Deputy have issued a joint statement saying that they will stand for re-election in October.

The joint announcement has been made by Deputy Carolyn Labey, who has served in the States since 2002, and Constable John Le Maistre, who has served since last year after winning a by-election to finish the term of Dan Murphy, who died last year.

Deputy Labey is Assistant Economic Development Minister with responsibility for agriculture and fisheries, and Mr Le Maistre sits on the Economic Affairs Scrutiny panel.

Deputy Labey – who founded the Grouville Gazette, and sits on the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission – worked to secure funding for fishermen who lost equipment and many weeks’ work during the storms at the start of the year.

She said: “I have really enjoyed working with the farmers and fishermen during this term of office. They are not the easiest of people to please it has to be said, but they are honest and forthright and I appreciate that. Their livelihoods are hard but they are the bedrock of our Community. They not only put food on our tables but they enhance our culture, traditions and add our whole offering that is Jersey.”

Mr Le Maistre – who sits on the Gorey Youth Club Committee and who is a former chairman of the parish Battle of Flowers Committee – said that the parish Constables should remain in the States.

He said: “I have learned a lot in my first year as Connetable and in particular I have enjoyed helping people whenever I can. I am really pleased that after taking a proposition to the States recently we will see better sports facilities and an improvement to the parking situation at Grouville School.”
