Guernsey goes into LOCKDOWN

Saturday 23 January 2021

Guernsey has gone into a "short, hard" lockdown with immediate effect after four covid cases of unknown origin were detected.

Almost all of the community restrictions that were in place in last spring's lockdown are now back in force.

The stay at home order is of "indeterminate" length and the first review will come in two weeks' time.

Schools, colleges and early years providers will close except for vulnerable students and children of essential workers. Parents and staff of year 8 pupils at a local secondary school are also being contacted.

Elective surgery has been postponed, care home visits have been stopped, while restaurants - including takeaways - and other non-essential business are not allowed to operate.

Physical distancing is now in place and all events have been cancelled.

Chief Minister Peter Ferbrache (picured top), who is head of the island's emergency committee said: "We have done this once and together we can do this successfully."

People should stay at home unless they are seeking medical care, carrying out essential shopping for food or supplies, or for up to two-hours exercise outdoors, with other members of their households unless they live alone in which case they can exercise with one member of another household while socially distanced.

"We cannot find an apparent link to the four cases," the island's Public Health Head, Dr Nicola Brink, said. "There are three adults and one teenager being managed at home."

The island's authorities have also issued an appeal to anyone who attended two premises - the Ship & Crown or Crow's Nest - between 18 and 20 January to contact Public Health to book a covid test.

Vaccination clinics that are scheduled for this weekend in Guernsey are still going ahead as planned, with extra protective measures, though anyone with symptoms should not attend.

Another media briefing is due to be held tomorrow to update islanders on the situation.
