Have you got what it takes to be a star?

Saturday 19 August 2017

The children’s charity, Variety Jersey, is welcoming nominations for their ‘Young Star of the Year’ awards.

Now in their eighth year, the awards seek to acknowledge and reward young people in Jersey for their achievements in the island community.

Islanders can now nominate young people they feel deserve recognition for their contribution to the following categories:

  • Courage
  • Community
  • Carer
  • Sports
  • Arts
  • Academia

Nominations can be made online here from now until mid-December. Hard copies of the nomination forms will be available in schools from September, as well as at all CI Co-op stores and at each of the parish halls.

Variety Jersey is holding a special gala event for those shortlisted for the awards on 4 March next year where the young stars’ stories will be shared.

The overall Young Star of the Year will be awarded £5,000 worth of travel vouchers to contribute to a family holiday of their choice. Winners in each category will receive £500 worth of vouchers and runners-up will receive £100 in vouchers.

Sandra Auckland, Chairman of the Young Star event, says: “It’s been a long wait but I am so excited to finally open the nominations for the 2018 Young Star of the Year Awards. Variety, the Children’s Charity, is dedicated to making a lasting difference by bringing hope and comfort to children who may be either disadvantaged or have special needs.

“These awards provide the perfect opportunity to recognise the many deserving youngsters in Jersey and I hope that many people will feel encouraged to put forward their nominations. This is a chance to recognise Jersey’s diverse and vibrant young community; children are the future and this event is so important to encourage their ambitions and future aspirations.”

Commenting on behalf of the awards’ sponsor, the CI Co-op, Colin Macleod, CEO, said: “The Variety Young Star of the Year Awards is always a significant event in our calendar. But the lead up to the event is just as important. This is the time when people have the chance to put forward their nominations and really make sure that every deserving youngster is recognised for their achievements. It is important for us to celebrate the many inspiring young Islanders and The Channel Islands Co-Operative Society is once again honoured to be part of this year’s awards.”
