A local finance firm has revealed that it is supporting the Jersey Reds "during their time of need" after the team announced liquidation was on the cards last week.
Hawk Group, a private family office which already sponsors Jersey RFC Women and individual athletes, announced in a statement that it had paid the team’s September salaries in full.
"The Jersey Reds team, a cornerstone of the Jersey sports scene, recently faced the abrupt cessation of trading, leaving players, support staff, and their families facing uncertain times," the statement read.
It continued: "The sudden cessation of trading has had a extreme impact on the players and support staff, many of whom are not originally from Jersey. This unforeseen turn of events has compelled several individuals and their families to make immediate adjustments, highlighting the Jersey Reds' far-reaching influence beyond the field."
Rob Morton, Chair of Hawk Group, said: "Family and community lie at the heart of what we do at Hawk Group. The Jersey Reds are not just a rugby team; they are an integral part of the island's identity and spirit."
He added: "By offering our support, we hope to ease the burden on the players, support staff, and their families during this challenging period. We believe that investing in the wellbeing of our local sporting heroes ultimately contributes to the prosperity and unity of the entire Jersey community."
The Government previously confirmed that it had already supported the Reds' to the tune of £370,000 in recent months. However, it was decided that it would not be "appropriate" to provide more, the Assistant Minister with responsibility for sport, Deputy Lucy Stephenson, said. She said that this position had been consistent and denied that there had been a U-turn.
