Upmarket jewellers Hettich have formerly lodged plans to create a new 3,000 sq ft showroom at the former Burtons store across the road with solar panels on the roof.

After more than 120 years of occupying 1 King Street, the family-owned firm purchased the opposite corner formally housing Burtons menswear store in July 2021.

They have now applied for permission to make various alterations inside and out, including the repair and replacement of shopfront windows and new external lights awnings, canopy and signage.

The plans also include a new entrance on King Street and solar panels on the roof.

The new showroom is expected to cover 3,000sqft, with more space on the second floor for storage and offices.

Announcing the plans last year, Managing Director Jeffrey Chinn said the new showroom would "echo our remarkable values and retain the air of elegance Hettich is renowned for".

He added that they were "excited about moving into a new era".

The former Burton building was built in the early 1930s in the art deco style.
