Hospice holds online service to remember loved ones

Saturday 05 December 2020

Islanders are being invited to remember loved ones who have passed away in a special online memorial event at 17:00 this evening.

Instead of having the room lit up with just candlelight, attendees of Jersey Hospice Care’s ‘Light Up A Life’ event this year will have their rooms lit up by their laptop screens.

This is because the event, which usually gives islanders the chance to light a candle in remembrance of a loved one they have lost, will be taking place online this year.

It will include the usual reading, singing and music, alongside the lighting of the five candles, climaxing with the Christmas tree lights being turned on outside Jersey Hospice. Islanders can also register to receive a free box including an Order of Service, a badge, a candle. The box will include two tree tags, one of which they can write on send back to have put up on Hospice's Christmas Tree.

Jersey Hospice Care Counselling and Emotional Support Counsellor, Mary Le Hegarat said: “In what’s been a truly challenging year for us all, many have also had to suffer the impact of losing someone close to them, and this is why we have put in every effort to create a virtual service that is as special as it usually is in person.

“Over the years, many people have found great comfort in our Light Up A Life event and use it each December as a time to remember, grieve and celebrate a friend or family member they have lost.

"We welcome everyone to join us, of any faith or no faith, and whether your loved one was cared for by the team at Hospice or not, you are sincerely welcome.”

Meanwhile, Hospice has also this week launched its annual Christmas Tree collection scheme, which sees them raise funds for the charity by recycling islanders' Christmas trees in January.

Online registration is now open, and costs a minimum donation of £10 for Hospice workers to collect your tree and recycle it at La Collette's green waste facilities.
