Islanders predict Euro 2016 win for Portugal tonight!

Thursday 30 June 2016

After England's humiliating defeat on Monday, the Portugal v Poland match tonight is keeping some Islanders' Euro 2016 hopes alive, but it seems the respective teams' fans here are expecting the same result - a win for Portugal.

Tonight's quarter-final match at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille kicks off at 8 pm and even though one Polish supporter is remaining cautiously optimistic, he admitted his team are lucky to have reached the last eight.

Poland fan Thomas Neyder said: "I think it's going to be 2-1 to Portugal. They are a strong team with experience. Poland played well so far, but i'm not sure they are going to get any further. Fingers crossed."

Portugal supporter Catia Velosa said: "Portugal is going to win 1-0. I think they are going to win for sure! I think Nani will score but my husband thinks it will be 2-0. He thinks Ronaldo is going to score as well!"

Both said they will be watching the big match at home tonight but Catia said she's ready to party if Portugal gets through to the semi-finals.

But there is still a glimmer of hope for Poland out there as Milena Ilak and Paulina Guzik have gone to work today all kitted out for the match.

They are predicting a draw and hope Poland eventually win on penalties.

Milena said: “It will be interesting to see what happens after the match, between the Polish and Portuguese communities in the Island.”

Police say although they are not expecting any trouble during the match, they will have extra officers out and about in case of friction between rival fans.

Acting Chief Inspector Matt Le Monnier said: "A dedicated team of officers will be deployed in addition to the normal shift officers on duty, with their sole purpose to focus on the football.

"A Sergeant will oversee a team of officers from the Community and Licensing Units and a dog handler. While I am not anticipating any trouble and appreciate that the vast majority of fans will watch the game with no interest in causing any trouble, we do have to ensure that we are able to respond effectively should any anti-social behaviour occur, as public safety will always be our trop priority."

You can watch the match live on ITV1.
