Islanders urged to donate shirts for 'tee-rrific' public art installation

Islanders are invited to donate a t-shirt with special meaning to be part of a public art installation in St Helier this summer that weaves together unique stories and memories.

The installation, titled 'Dancing Together,' will form a large canopy stretching across the high street in town.

The installation aims to represent the community's diverse experiences through the stories and memories tied to the donated shirts.

It is being created by Finnish contemporary artist and sculptor Kaarina Kaikkonen and produced by Art House Jersey.

This installation will be the first piece in the newly launched Butterfield Public Art Series, which will feature annual public artworks produced by Art House Jersey together with Butterfield Bank in Jersey's public spaces.

ArtHouse Jersey said they need 600 shirts or t-shirts donated by the community to form the piece. It will be installed in mid-August and remain in place until mid-October.

The artwork will then be moved to the ArtHouse Jersey exhibition space at Capital House where it will open to the public from 7 November.

Tom Dingle, Director of ArtHouse Jersey, said: "For this first Butterfield Public Art Series, we're thrilled to open with Kaarina Kaikkonen's stunning 'Dancing Together' artwork right in the heart of St Helier.

"It will represent our diverse community's experiences through the stories and memories tied to islanders' shirts."

Jacob Cockcroft, Chief Commercial Officer of Butterfield Bank in the Channel Islands, said the bank is proud to support the initiative.

He added: "The arts play an incredibly important role in enriching the lives of those who live and work in Jersey."

Donations will be accepted from 7 June until the end of July or until 600 shirts have been collected.

Drop-off locations include Ransoms Garden Centre, Citizens Advice Jersey, all library branches, Mind Jersey Drop-In Centre, ArtHouse Jersey and Butterfield IFC6.

Islanders are also invited to share the story or memory associated with their donated shirt anonymously via postcard or by emailing text, audio or video material to shirts@arts.je.
