Jersey estate agent recalls “humble and respectful” Donald Trump

Monday 14 November 2016

Margaret Thompson celebrated New Year's Eve in style last year – at the same plush party as America’s new President Donald Trump.

Ms Thompson even chatted briefly to ‘The Donald’ and he noticed her Scottish accent, as his own family roots are north of the border.

Ms Thompson took a holiday with some close friends last December to Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump is a member of a private club.

Just before New Year’s Eve the club announced that Trump would be joining them with his family.

“It was a terrific New Year’s Eve party and I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to meet Mr Trump, albeit briefly. I found him very polite, very humble and respectful,” said Ms Thompson, owner of Thompson’s Estates.

She added: “I only met him very briefly, but he did do a double-take when he heard my Scottish voice.

“He was introduced to the crowd ‘Welcome to the next President of the United States’ and I remember the first thing he did was apologise and say that the introduction was a bit presumptuous.

“It was great evening and one of the best gatherings I have ever been to. The drinks and food were fantastic and it was followed by a very memorable five-course dinner.

“There were a lot of TV crews allowed into the club so they could get a few words at midnight with Mr Trump and I remember he went outside to do that just after the New Year was sung in.”

As for the new President’s politics, Ms Thompson said: “I don’t feel he is in any way a racist. I think he showed all the people that night how respectful he was and while I don’t agree with some of the shock terminology he has used in the election build-up, it gave him billions of pounds worth in free publicity and they say all publicity is good publicity.”

Ms Thompson enjoyed her brief encounter with the new President so much, she is returning again this December.

“I am going again this year. Whether Mr Trump is there I don’t know, but it was a great evening and the perfect way to bring in New Year.”
