Jersey cricketers lose opener to Oman by six wickets

Jersey's cricketers began their bid for glory last night in their first match of the World Cricket League Division Four against Oman in Los Angeles - but they came up short, losing by six wickets.

The Jersey squad are bidding for promotion to the World Cricket League Division Three and although they beat Oman in May, on this occasion they came up second best.

The top two sides in the six-team league - Jersey, Oman, Denmark, Italy, Bermuda and hosts USA - will be promoted, while the bottom two will drop down to World Cricket League Division Five.

Jersey endured a poor start as skipper Peter Gough lost his fellow opener in the second over via a run out. Gough and Gallichan put on a 50 partnership, but when the Jersey skipper was out for 29, Jenner and Carylon followed him quickly back into the pavilion. Gallichan was out for 43 with the scorer on 99 and half the Jersey side out.

Hawkins-Kay and Bisson held the side together with an unbroken stand of 104, taking Jersey's score to 203-5 at the end of their 50 overs.

It did not look like enough and so it was to prove as Khadye's 79 not out steered Oman to a comfortable victory with over three overs to spare.
