WATCH: Enjoying the sun? So are these cows...

Friday 20 April 2018

A video showing more than 200 cows being released outside and frolicking in the sunshine for the first time this year has warmed the hearts of islanders.

Tom Perchard posted the video, which shows the Jersey cows galloping up a concreate pathway into a field full of luscious grass for them to graze on his farm’s Facebook page.

The video, which features the caption “Awesome to see the girls getting some sun on their backs and enjoying a beautiful spring day here in Jersey!", has attracted over 300 likes and 200 shares by islanders within the first 24 hours.

Video: Tom's video of the cows enjoying the sunshine for the first time this year went viral on social media.

Tom, who is the third generation to run the family owned ‘La Ferme’ Farm in St. Martin with his dad, told Express he is pleasantly surprised at the reaction the cows have attracted on social media: “I guess it’s something we take for granted [on the farm], it’s amazing to see so many people get so much enjoyment from it.”

He admitted he was a little worried some people may write negative comments objecting to the cows being kept inside over the winter months, but said it’s purely to control their diet and maintain the grazing areas.

“We love having the cows outside but it’s just not practical. This year’s been especially awful, so wet that the cows end up trampling the grass all in instead of eating it.” Which he explained would end up ruining the grazing areas of the farm.

Despite a rather wet winter, the cows have had their first outing of the year only one or two weeks later than usual, because of the lovely April weather.

Tom said the cows are a little bit less excited this morning during their second visit to the field: “They are a lot more chilled today and are eating more, which is good as they spent most of yesterday just running around.”
