Jersey Mutual building to be converted into flats

Thursday 15 December 2022

A planning application has been put in to convert the Jersey Mutual building on Halkett Place into 11 one-bedroom flats.

It was vacated by the insurance company earlier this year.

The plans have been put forward by Helmsdale Investments Ltd, a Berkshire-based real estate company, with plans being drawn up by MAC Archictects.

The three-storey building currently consists of disused office space on the first two floors, with an apartment on the top floor. The plan is to retain the existing apartment, but covert all the existing office space into one bedroom apartments.

The plans would also see the addition of an entirely new floor, with balcony included. In total, the plans would see 11, one-bedroom flats added to the building.  A bike storage area will also be provided for residents.

Jersey Mutual, who's name still adorns the building, are one of Jersey's oldest and best-known insurers, being founded in 1869. Whilst still based at the building in 2018, the company was discovered to have a £900,000 deficit in its account, leading to an ongoing probe.
