WANTED: Volunteers for accessible cycling centre

Sunday 23 August 2020

Volunteers are being sought for Jersey's first ever inclusive cycling centre, tailored towards helping people of every ability improve their mental and physical wellbeing through cycling.

According to Move More Jersey, which is championing the creation of the centre, over a quarter of local households include someone with a disability, amounting to roughly 13,900 people island-wide.

However, 60% of disabled islanders feel unable to take part in community activities.

Move More Jersey is therefore aiming to create a safe, outdoor space where islanders with disabilities can experience the benefits of cycling on their physical and mental health with a community of other people.

Bikes like trikes, recumbent bikes, handcycles, companion bikes and power-assisted wheelchair transporters have been specially designed to allow use for people who suffer from a disability and will all be stocked at the new centre, which is being supported by Ocorian Trust, Enable Jersey, HSBC Channel Islands and a private donor.

But one thing Move More Jersey still needs to stock up on is volunteers.

Cirsty de Gruchy, Head of Move More Jersey, said: “The centre allows us the opportunity to provide disabled islanders with freedom from daily constraints and the ability to extend the speed and distance of movement compared to their normal wheelchair or other form of mobility aid. For some, this may be by cycling independently on an adapted bike and for others, being supported by a companion on one of the two-person bikes we will have at the centre.”

She continued: "We're delighted to be opening this new centre and are looking for passionate people who can join our team to support the project. We can guarantee the rewards of being involved outweighs the time you give."
