Nine staff at a contact lens shipping centre have been told that their jobs are at risk.
The staff at ‘daysoft’ contact lenses in St Peter were called to a meeting yesterday and told that the fulfilment centre was at risk of closure.
It is understood that a decision over the jobs will be taken this weekend.
The company, which has been operating here since 2008, manufactures contact lenses in Blantyre in Scotland, and ships them to clients from Jersey.
Company spokesman Ron Hamilton said the high costs of operating a business here had led to daysoft looking elsewhere at other options.
He said: “It is regrettable that we must consider the future of the Jersey fulfilment centre but our decision to do so is the appropriate action for the business.
“The costs of fulfilling in Jersey, coupled with the difficulties of delivery associated with an island economy, mean we must consider whether Jersey remains the most viable and cost effective way to deliver our products to our customers.
“It is entirely appropriate, and the responsible thing to do, to tell our hard-working team now of the potential risk to employment.”
“We are considering how best to move forward and will make that decision shortly. Our staff will be the first to know what we are going to do and we will make every effort to keep them informed.”
