The founder of the popular Market Juice Bar, who wants to see a “more equal society with a stronger sense of inclusivity” and better rental regulation in Jersey, is standing for election in St. Helier.
A candidate for Reform Jersey, Beatriz Porée (55) is hoping to take one of four Deputy seats in St. Helier South, which includes most of town, Havre des Pas and the Waterfront area.
The impact of the rising cost of living on the economy, and in particular the cost of housing’s impact on poverty, is a key concern for the businesswoman.
“As someone who has lived in rental accommodation for the majority of my time in Jersey, I feel that we need to develop better balanced rental regulations, both on private and social housing. This must be dealt with if Jersey is to keep a strong workforce necessary to ensure that the island’s economy is supported.”
Born in Angola, Mrs Porée grew up in Portugal before moving to Jersey, where she now lives with her husband and children.
Mrs Porée – who would be the second Portuguese national to serve in the States Assembly if elected – says she would like to see the States Assembly better reflect Jersey as an increasingly diverse island.
“People from different cultural, racial and religious backgrounds are more of an active and integrated part of Jersey society. It is vital that the States Assembly and its members are representative and reflect the present diversity in the island.”
She added: “If elected I will strive to work with other Reform Jersey States Members to create a more equal society with a stronger sense of inclusivity. At a time when there is much economic uncertainty and the huge cost of living increases taking place it is more important than ever to look after those who earn the least.”
Jersey's election is taking place in June.
Today is the last day to register to vote, with registration closing at 12:00. Click HERE to complete the two-minute process.
