Kitchen Gardens sprout in primary schools

Caring Cooks are doubling the number of Kitchen Gardens in Jersey primary schools thanks to the sponsorship of law firm, Ogier.

With the opening of gardens in Janvrin, Grand Vaux and La Moye schools, hundreds more pupils will now benefit from the 'plant to plate' project and learn how to grow food from seed, harvest and cook it.

Melissa Nobrega, Caring Cooks founder said: “We’re thrilled to have Ogier’s support with what we truly believe is a fantastic project. Their generous sponsorship is giving the children at these schools a great opportunity to learn life skills and grow up with a knowledge of exactly where food comes from. The Kitchen Garden Project works seamlessly alongside our Let’s Get Cooking programme, which our new Food and Nutrition Coordinator, Rachel Higo has already started delivering in Samarès, Mont Nicolle and St Luke’s, the three schools first involved in the programme."

As part of Ogier's sponsorship, a few of their employees, including Edward Mackereth Global Managing Partner, joined the pupils at Janvrin School on Friday to help them plant beans, carrots, beetroot and other vegetables. They dug deep under the expert eye of Graeme Le Marquand, Chairman of the National Vegetable Society.

Kate Kirk, Head of Marketing at Ogier said: "We have watched Caring Cooks develop its vital support for the Jersey community, and are impressed by the way the team and volunteers are so dedicated to making a difference. Education is essential to equip the next generation with so many skills, including growing food from seed, preparing nutritious meals from scratch, and understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The food children eat is vital not just for their physical development, but to support their learning ability too. We are extremely proud to be sponsoring this element of the Caring Cooks campaign."
