Late-night cooking could have proved fatal

Tuesday 12 May 2015

An Islander had a lucky escape last night after falling asleep with their dinner still cooking on the hob.

Firefighters were called out to a block of flats in town just before 10.30 pm after someone smelt burning coming from the building.

A crew from Green Watch arrived to find the third floor flat filling up with smoke and had to wake the person living there up who was oblivious to the danger they were in. A small fire had started on the cooker.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan said: “This incident could have been fatal had it not been dealt with in its early stages, I would therefore like to remind everybody NOT to leave cooking unattended and to ensure they have a working smoke alarm.”
