Lessons on crime for youngsters

Monday 22 February 2016

Youngsters will be coming face-to-face with police firearms teams, police dogs, “legal high” experts and a mock prison cell over the next seven days as part of the “Prison! Me! No way!!!” Crime Week Programme.

Youth crime levels are still at an all-time low, but the charity set up to educate children about the impact and consequences of crime.

The charity has organised a series of event with the States of Jersey Police, Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, Prison Service and paramedics to talk to youngsters in schools over the next seven days.

“Prison! Me! No way!!!” (PMNW) has been running in Jersey since 2002, and last year almost 11,00 children across the Island took part in their activities.

The new Deputy Chief of Police, Superintendent Rob Bastable, said that the initiative had the full backing of the force.

He said: “The States of Jersey Police is very proud of its involvement with PMNW.

“It is a fine example of how the community works together to inform and educate its young people in making the right life choices.

“PMNW has played a significant part in achieving very low levels of youth crime in Jersey and making sure that Jersey remains a safe place to live and visit.”

Events listed for the week include:

- The Police Dog Handling Team visiting schools to give a demonstration, and to give a public debut to the new police dogs Meg and Jack.

- The Police Firearms Team explaining how hard it is for officers to decide whether they are facing someone with a real, or fake firearm.

- Firefighters talking about the importance of smoke alarms and the need for clear escape plans, including the repercussions of making hoax calls.

- Paramedics giving advice on what to do if someone has been injured while they are waiting for paramedics to arrive at the scene.
