Jersey diversity and equality champion receives MBE

The CEO of local charity Liberate has received his MBE for services to inclusion and diversity in the island.

Vic Tanner-Davy, who was one of seven islanders to have been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list last year, has dedicated his spare time to the charity Liberate since 2014.

Since its formation, the charity has been involved in consultations with the States of Jersey and Guernsey on various pieces of legislation including anti-discrimination laws, helping to ensure that Jersey's sex discrimination legislation includes recognition of intersex as a protected characteristic, and protections for all people who are of non-binary gender.

In September 2015, Liberate was responsible for delivering the first ever Pride celebration to be held in the Channel Islands.

More recently, Liberate set up a 'mystery shopping' scheme to test accessibility at organisations aiming to become Accès-accredited by Liberate, which has involved partnering with Jersey Cheshire Home.

On Tuesday, Mr Tanner-Davy was presented with his MBE by His Majesty Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

Of the occasion, he said: “I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to experience receiving an award at Buckingham Palace. The morning flies by and you try to remember every bit of it, so you can share it with all the people who you would have liked to have been there.

"I was the penultimate recipient, so, although we had the longest wait, I also got a little bit more time to speak to His Majesty.

"He was very interested in the work Liberate do and asked whether, as a relatively new charity, we have to do a lot of fundraising. I was able to explain that we try to be as self-sustaining as possible through our education work and accreditation schemes."

He was joined for the occasion by Paddy Haversham-Quaid, Liberate's Chief Executive Officer, and Christian May, Chair of the charity and its first committee member.

"It is always a team effort and I have been hugely lucky to work with some amazing people," Mr Tanner-Davy added.

"I was delighted that Paddy and Christian were able to join me at Buckingham Palace as the two original members of Liberate who have been on this whole journey with me, and without whose support I could not have done half the things we have.”
