Liberation Day goes virtual again

Friday 23 April 2021

Liberation Day is set to go virtual again this year, with plans instead for ‘Liberation 77’ next year to make up for the big celebrations the island missed due to the pandemic.

Due to continuing covid uncertainty, the Bailiff’s Chambers have announced that this year’s celebrations will once again be scaled back and delivered via social media.

The official schedule of celebrations, which will be live-streamed on social media, will be:

10:30    Special States Sitting with a limited number of States members attending due to physical distancing.

10:50     Musical Originals to sing

10:55     Bailiff’s public address

11:00     Service of Thanksgiving by the Dean of Jersey from the Town Church

11:05     Beautiful Jersey sung by Musical Originals soloist

11:02     Re-enactment of the Liberation including the Jersey Field Squadron retracing the footsteps of F135

11:06     Flag raising/National Anthem

In addition, the Bailiff Chambers will be assisting the Liberation Music Festival, which is promising a mix of online and in-person concerts.

The festival begins on Liberation Day (Sunday 9 May) at 20:00 with the Virtual Liberation Day Celebration featuring more than 100 Jersey musicians.

Running until June, there’ll be a number of ‘Musical Walks’ and concerts in island beauty spots, culminating in the Liberation@Home Finale, a digital concert featuring Jersey stars alongside international soloists, on 13 June at 20:00.

The Bailiff’s Chambers said it had hoped to continue with a number of projects from 2020’s milestone Liberation 75, but that plans were now underway to ensure next year’s celebration makes up for it.
