LISTEN: Training Ukraine's first female bomb disposal operators

Friday 25 August 2023

Many of the donations from Jersey to Ukraine have gone towards training the country's first ever female bomb disposal operators... But what does that training involve? And how does it translate to life out in the field dealing with unexploded landmines and devices?

Friends of Ukraine have received £262,000 of funding from Jersey Overseas Aid so far, much of it going towards activities relating to 'explosive ordnance disposal' (EOD).

The charity works with the MAT-Kosovo training centre in Kosovo to deliver EOD training.

After the Ukrainian decree banning men from leaving the country, the only people who were able to attend the training sessions were women.

Based between Ukraine and Kosovo, Uliana Yurenko, Head Technical Translator and Interpreter at charity MAT Kosovo, has been a key part of creating the Ukrainian bomb disposal training programme, translating materials for their students.

"Every Ukrainian, every responsible citizen, would say, has to think of how you can contribute to the defence of your country," she explained.

To mark Ukraine's national day this week, Express sat down with Uliana and Ben Remfrey MBE of Friends of Ukraine, to learn more about how the island-funded initiative is helping save lives...

If you want to support their work, the Bailiff's Ukraine Appeal is open for donations.
