Little fun in the skies!

Wednesday 17 September 2014

It wasn't just big fighters taking to the skies last week.

More than 80 model aircraft from Jersey and Guernsey were on show at the Battle of Britain Model Air Display on Sunday – replicas of many of the planes flying in the full-size show at the Jersey International Air Display on Thursday.

The event has been running since the 1970’s when displays were held on the beach at West Park. It’s since moved to the Model Aero Club’s flying site at Les Landes and is still a crowd-pleasing finale to Battle of Britain week attracting locals and visitors from the UK and Belgium.

It's a bit more of a light-hearted event, with a toffee drop section for kids, an aerial omelette challenge with eggs dropped from aircraft that chefs have to catch in pans, and some (slightly more haphazard) formation flying from some miniature Red Arrows.

Two Avro Lancasters will be flying in for this year’s Jersey International Air Display and there are big plans for the model planes too - with a memorial flight featuring a Lancaster, a Spitfire and a Hurricane.

There was a serious side to the show too - the Club carried out a drone demo delivering a message about the new regulations following concerns from members of the public over their misuse.
