A local Deli is proving it's a cut above the rest and is up for a national award.
Don Street Deli by Shaun Rankin is one of six finalists in the running for Delicatessen of the Year in the Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2016.
The Chairman of judges Nigel Barden said: “The artisan food and drink market is particularly competitive and it’s crucial that we recognise those who are championing the sector by leading from the front. It’s important that they can be acknowledged by the public and their peers in the trade.”
The judges have been carrying out 'secret visits' to see all the retailers in action and all the entries have been scored and judged along with online votes from consumers.
Don Street Deli’s Food and Beverages Manager Barbara Lomnicka said: “We are so thrilled to be shortlisted in this year’s Farm Shop and Deli Awards. Don Street Deli is all about providing quality products by working with exceptional producers and smallholders, as well as local suppliers.
“We also work very closely with our customers, asking questions and providing samples in order to develop our services and get to where we are today. To be a finalist for ‘Delicatessen of the Year’ is a credit to everyone’s hard work and we are really looking forward to the awards.”
There are a dozen different award groups and all the regional winners will be selected from the category finalists and announced live at the awards on 18 April at the NEC in Birmingham.
Co-Chair of judges, Food Writer Elaine Lemm said: “Every year I feel the standard of entries to the Farm Shop & Deli Awards could not possibly get any higher. Every year I am wrong and this year is no exception.
“From the tiniest of shops, market stalls, and sole traders, to the largest of food halls and farm shops, the passion, dedication, and hard work shines through from everyone, is it any wonder standards continue to climb? Everyone who has reached this stage of these prestigious awards should congratulate themselves; you are already winners and for a good reason because you are among the best in the UK.”
The awards are run in partnership with Dorset-based Olives Et Al who specialise in marinated, stuffed and pitted olives.
