Lockdown loosened in Sark and Alderney

Thursday 16 April 2020

Lockdown restrictions are being loosened slightly in Sark and Alderney, with no positive covid-19 cases identified in either island so far.

Following a request from Sark's government, the Committee for Health and Social Care has allowed for outdoor work to continue in the island.

People can either work on their own or in pairs, so long as social distancing measures are followed at all times.

The proposals were approved by Guernsey's Public Health after careful consideration, as a form of "pilot transition" from firm lockdown.

"Sark in particular imposed incredibly strict measures in terms of entering the island for some time, with anyone arriving since 20 March being taken by the Sark ambulance and placed in mandatory self isolation for 14 days," Guernsey's Health Committee President, Deputy Heidi Soulsby.

The changes will be revoked immediately if one person in the island tests positive for covid-19, she said.

Meanwhile, the States of Alderney requested for some food establishments to be able to open their kitchens to support the demand for Meals on Wheels.

"...The Committee has agreed to authorise four establishments to provide prepared food, as long as they do so with low workers in the kitchens and the food is delivered by Meals on Wheels," Deputy Soulsby said.

These changes have also been supported by Public Health.

"I think it is important to make it clear that these are limited exemptions specific to our small islands to meet their unique needs," added Deputy Soulsby.

The States of Guernsey and Public Health are due to make a decision on plans for the entire Bailiwick going forward later this week.

The news comes as questions continue to be raised over Jersey's strategy for 'exiting' lockdown.

In a press conference held yesterday, the Government of Jersey's Chief Executive, Charlie Parker, said that all decisions would be taken in line with the latest modelling data.
