Lucy O'Sullivan, Team GB Archer: Five things I would change about Jersey

Friday 15 February 2019

When she's not hitting the gold, this impressive sportswoman with many strings to her bow, is out there thinking of ways to improve our island.

Despite the fact that she has competed at a world-level in archery since 2004, Lucy has still been able to carve out time to set up her own business LOSPT (Lucy O'Sullivan Personal Training).

And if that's not impressive enough, as well as helping others like Jersey Reds Women with their fitness, she's a part of Team GB.

Her skills might have taken her global, but Lucy has managed to stay island-based throughout her career (even becoming Miss Battle in 2009!) - something quite unusual. She therefore has a goal to support local talent to allow them to remain living in Jersey rather than having to go to the UK to pursue their passion.

After all, Lucy believes that "our way of living is far superior to the UK". "Who can leave their office job on Friday night and head to the beach for a BBQ? Every islander of course! And that is what makes our island truly magical," she says.

As such a keen island advocate, she struggled with coming up with five improvements for her beloved Jersey, but managed to think of these five...

1. Affordable housing

As a first-time buyer, it is really hard to find something that I can afford that isn’t a flat.

As a Great Britain archer, I need to practice at home as much as I can, and would therefore need a small garden, but those type of homes are just too expensive for a first time buyer in Jersey!

2. Cultivate local talent

Whether it be archery, another sporting talent or a musical talent, for example, it is increasingly difficult for people to compete at a high level without leaving the island.

Things need to be put in place whereby those individuals are supported with flights for example, and a media profile created about them and their trips, to then encourage others to strive for perfection in their field of expertise too. Let’s be proud of Jersey talent and keep them living on-island!

3. Better cycle paths - and more of them!

I am a 'west-y' and what would help out my poor road bike would be paving the railway track in a road-bike friendly material. That being said, the bicycle routes into town are excellent, and St. Peter has done a fantastic job recently as well!

When I moved to the East for a few months, it was much more dangerous for me to cycle into town as there were no cycle paths all the way. So that would be a great thing to encourage parishes to do.

4. Support sport

It is hard as an archer to find a spot where we can have consistent training in the evenings! I think that sports facilities really need to be thought about, and grouping sports like archery and shooting and creating a pleasant, (not a damp dingy tunnel!) environment for them would be a great start for my sport.

...But something needs to be done for all clubs where the cost of hiring a hall isn’t extortionate too!

5. Keep tourism going

I know I am constantly promoting my island to attract tourists. Whether it be sharing the what’s going on section of the Visit Jersey website, or wearing my team Jersey kit when I compete in the UK, and as far afield as China.

The island people need to do what they can to keep the tourist industry going for our beautiful island. Get 'snap happy' and share our wonderful island, guys!
