A senior business leader, health service professional, and sailing enthusiast has added another chapter to his bulging CV after being appointed as the first permanent Chair of Jersey's Health Advisory Board.
The appointment of Tom Hayhoe was confirmed yesterday by Health Minister Tom Binet on the eve of the board meeting taking place at St Paul's Centre today.
The role attracted controversy after Interim Chair, Professor Hugo Mascie-Taylor had his contract extended, with the cost of this move cited as one of the factors leading to the resignation of Constable Andy Jehan from the Government last November.
Mr Hayhoe – described by Deputy Binet as having “an exceptional understanding of health service delivery” – has more than 35 years’ experience in health leadership, including being chairman of West London NHS Trust and West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust.
Prior to becoming involved in the health arena, Mr Hayhoe worked in retail for stationery companies including WHSmith and Oyez Straker.

Mr Hayhoe, who grew up in Dorset, is a Cambridge University graduate, having studied history at Corpus Christi College in the mid-1970s.
He subsequently gained a MBA qualification from Stanford University in the United States.

During his time at Cambridge, Mr Hayhoe was President of the Student Union and Chair of the university branch of the Tory Reform Group.
He subsequently left the Conservative Party and in 1987 he was a defeated candidate in the UK general election, contesting the seat of Wycombe on behalf of the Social Democratic Party.
His interests include sailing, and he was Vice Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club from 2003 to 2010.
The Health Advisory Board was established by the States Assembly in June 2023 to strengthen the performance of the Health Department.
As well as its independent Chair, the board includes up to five Non-Executive Directors and the department's Executive Directors, and is charged with driving up the standard of care for the benefit of islanders.
