A 24-year-old man has been arrested for grave and criminal assault and possession of an offensive weapon following the stabbing of a man in his 20s on Sunday by St. Thomas's Church.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 05:30, during what the police described as a “physical altercation” between two men.
Police were called to the area shortly after the incident. One of the men was said to have fled in the direction of New Street, while the other was left lying on the pavement by St Thomas's Church northern car park entrance.
The man had been stabbed with a knife and was taken to the hospital. Luckily his injury was minor and only required several stitches, and he was discharged shortly after attending A&E.
Police cordoned off the area and carried out searches in various locations in an attempt to find the suspect and the knife. Islanders living in the area reported seeing armed officers and a dog handler.
Further enquiries led to the arrest, last night, of a 24-year-old man at a property in Val Plaisant, for grave and criminal assault and possession of an offensive weapon. He currently remains in custody.
