A 55-year-old man has been charged with smuggling cocaine into the island after Customs officers discovered a stash worth up to £19,000 in passenger baggage.

Andrew Bennett, who is from the UK and arrived in Jersey on a flight from Bristol on Friday, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday, accused of importing around four ounces of cocaine.

He was arrested and charged after Jersey Customs and Immigration Service officials discovered a quantity of cocaine in passenger baggage at the Airport.

They said it had a street value of between £13,000 and £19,000.

In a statement signed off by the Home Affairs Minister this afternoon on the matter, members of the public were urged to get in touch in confidence if they had any information on the matter by calling 0800 735 555.
