Meet the writers at the Barracks

Sunday 24 November 2019

Islanders are invited to come meet high profile authors who are in residence in the island to discuss their work and learn more about the writing process as part of the inaugural Writers Week launched by ArtHouse Jersey.

The Writers in Residence include Candice Carty-Williams; Andy Stanton whose recent Children’s series Mr Gum has sold 3.6 million copies in the U.K alone; Cesca Major, whose debut historical novel has been described as a "smart, flawless and unforgettable triumph" and Charlene James whose play ‘Cuttin’ It’ was awarded the Alfred Fagon Award for best new play at the National Theatre.

ArtHouse Jersey's recent move  to the Grève de Lecq Barracks, a National Trust for Jersey property, has enabled the charity to attract top creative talent to the Island.

The historic site has been recently renovated, creating two spacious and modern apartments which are available for visiting artists. "A residency with ArtHouse Jersey offers a change of scene, a break from the usual routine and a quiet, rural setting which allows artists the headspace to focus on new work," the charity said.

Whilst in the island, the writers will be working on personal projects and also engaging in two outreach opportunities within the local community.

They will be taking part in a new scheme during which they will mentor a group of local writers, who have been selected following a round of applications.

The scheme is intended to give aspiring local writers the chance to receive feedback on their writing from an established author and guidance on how to progress their writing careers.

Members of the public are also invited to meet the writers on 28 November between 18:00 and 19:00.

It will be the opportunity to meet the authors, discuss their work and learn more about the writing process. "This is a unique opportunity to engage with some internationally renowned, high profile authors," ArtHouse Jersey said.

“We’re pleased to be welcoming such a talented group of writers to the Barracks for Writers Week," Tom Dingle, Director of ArtHouse Jersey said.

"All the writers we are hosting are creating some really exciting work, and we’re pleased to be able to offer two opportunities for aspiring local writers to engage with these established figures. Our residency scheme is designed to bring exciting talent to the Island and enrich the cultural life of the Island as a result.”
