Ministers to name venues with poor tracing if covid case found

Venues with poor contact tracing protocols are being warned that they may be named publicly by Ministers if they are visited by people who later test positive for covid.

The Government’s big push to remind cafés, pubs and restaurants ahead of this weekend comes amid concerns about the amount of contact tracing data on the main IT system recently dropping by 30%, while covid cases continue to rise.

The number of people officially recorded as having the virus in Jersey is 30. Nine new cases have been detected in the past 24 hours – four were seeking healthcare, three were contact traced, and two were inbound travellers.

468 people are in quarantine as direct contacts.

Businesses are being reminded to collect contact details for all customers when food and drink is served, and to maintain good hygiene and ventilation with hand sanitiser available for staff and customers.

While masks won’t be required in law from Monday, except on public transport, businesses are still being encouraged to support the use of masks in more crowded indoor areas. 

On the decision to name venues where there has been a positive covid case if there are concerns about contact tracing, Health Minister Deputy Richard Renouf said: “Notifying the public regarding areas where covid has been present, is not to ‘shame and name’ businesses but to help identify direct contacts. If businesses adhere to the guidance, it will reduce the spread within their establishment, however this is supported by the reality that an asymptomatic positive case may still visit.  

“I urge businesses and islanders to remind themselves about the requirements and public health measures, so that we can all remain as safe as possible and continue to enjoy the freedoms we have during a safe summer.”

Out this weekend? Remember to give your contact details when entering pubs, bars and restaurants. This safety measure is required by law, so if someone is identified as infectious, the Contact Tracing Team can reach anyone who might have been exposed.

Deputy Medical Officer for Health Dr Ivan Muscat reminded islanders: “About a third of people with the virus have no symptoms, contact tracing helps to reduce the risk that people spread the virus unknowingly.

"Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that if they have symptoms that may be due to covid to isolate and arrange for testing via the helpline on 01534 445566.”
