The European Touch Championships due to be held here in July are expected to attract more than 1,000 competitors to the Island, according to organisers.

The sport has been played in Jersey for 16 years, and the Island's mixed team was crowned European Champions in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

Jersey's entrants in the event - who are sponsored by Mourant Ozannes - are in the Mixed Open, Senior Mixed Open and Men's 40s competitions, and they will be taking on the best players from 16 other nations including Six Nations countries England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

The Jersey teams have been selected from over 250 competitors of all ages who regularly play.

Mourant Ozannes Jersey Managing Partner Jonathan Speck said that they were pleased to be backing the event.

He said: “Mourant Ozannes is delighted to sponsor Jersey’s Touch Rugby stars and we wish not only them, but all of the players from every competing nation, a successful tournament.”

Jersey’s domestic Touch has a Summer Corporate League, Elite League and Super League, catering for players aged 12 and above.

Every year Jersey and Guernsey compete in an inter-insular tournament featuring men’s, ladies and mixed teams; this year it will take place in Guernsey.
