Amount spent on States’ credit cards is dropping

Thursday 24 December 2015

There’s more than 1,200 people with a States’ credit card – but the really good news is that they’re spending a lot less.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that the number of cards issued to staff has dropped over the last few years to 1,203.

But the more important news is that the amount of money being spent on the cards has dropped considerably.

From January to December last year, those cards accounted for £3,778,575 worth of taxpayers’ money being spent.

From January to October this year, the figure was £2,608,987 – and at that rate, by the end of the year that should end up at around £3.1 million.

It’s the Health and Social Services cards that get more of a battering than any of the others – they also hold the record for the highest monthly spend in the last two years, racking up £169,796 in February 2014.

Note: An error about the number of cards in the early draft of this story has been corrected.
